The field of accounting offers more opportunities than ever before. Here’s a few tips on landing that all-important job.
As you may have read elsewhere on my blog, in 2017 Bookkeeping Plus celebrates thirty years of providing accounting services. We could not have arrived at this milestone without providing career opportunities for the best and brightest in the field. If you are in the process of seeking the next step in your accounting career, here are some ideas of what we look for at Bookkeeping Plus when receiving applications.
Tailor your resume to the job. Don’t just send a generic or all-encompassing history of everything you’ve ever been or done. Instead, you should craft a version of your resume that highlights those aspects of your education or experience that will be most relevant to that particular employer or position. When I receive a resume, if I don’t see what I’m looking for at first glance, I won’t take time to read every line.
Include a cover letter. A concise cover letter helps you get noticed. Explain why you have an interest in this particular firm, and why your skills would be a good fit. Use the facts to sell yourself! You can also use the cover letter to explain gaps in your career progression or unusual circumstances. Not long ago, I hired someone who used her cover letter to explain that although she had been out of the field while raising a family, her accounting skills were still sharp and she was ready to resume her career.
Make sure this is the job for you. Job-hunting takes time; don’t waste it pursuing jobs that won’t suit you. Do some research to find out if this company offers the culture and environment that fits you. For example, Bookkeeping Plus is a great fit for someone who prefers a friendly, small-firm atmosphere. Or, are you looking for flexible work schedules? Do you enjoy working with people as much as you enjoy the number-crunching? If so, BPI might be a good fit for you, but other firms might not.
Get started now, and best of luck in your search! In the meantime, check out the Bookkeeping Plus Careers page. You never know, maybe the right opportunity for you is right here! —Beth A. Marsh, CEO
