Make Your Company a Great Place to Work, Part 3

In the third part of our series, we invite you to examine the ways in which you can make your company a more pleasant place to work.

So far, we have discussed two ingredients of the best places to work: providing an opportunity for work-life balance, and fostering great communication with your team. But if you really want to make your employees more comfortable at work, start by doing—well, just that!

Not surprisingly, it’s the little things that count, and they add up. Everyone at Bookkeeping Plus has an attractive workstation, with plenty of storage space. Their tools and software and technology comprise the latest available, with dual monitors and a printer and label printer within arm’s reach. You would be surprised at how often new employees have told me that their last employer never paid this much attention to the comfort of their work setting or the reliability of their tools.

BPI is fortunate in that by being located just outside the Indianapolis metropolitan area, anyone commuting to our office is going against the rush-hour traffic. We also have a parking spot for everyone literally just steps from the building.

Not every company can offer an easy commute and no parking-garage hassles, but there is almost always something you can do to make your employees’ lives a little easier. Bookkeeping Plus is famous for providing snacks of all types, pre-wrapped and including lots of chocolate! In the middle of January—our busiest month—we provide a fun little care package that we call a “Survival Kit.” And year-round, Friday is always a blue-jeans day!

Ask your staff for ideas and feedback, and get creative! That’s the secret to making a better workplace. —Beth A. Marsh, CEO
